Term 1 Week 2

What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 16.9.24

What we are learning this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 16.9.24

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are identifying numbers that are powers of 10 and looking for number patterns and sequences.  Lilac Class are then moving onto partitioning larger numbers for supporting methods for addition and subtraction.

In English this week, we are reading a selection of poems about space, looking particularly at the work of Pie Corbett. We will be ‘Magpies’ where we are ‘stealing’ words and phrases from a selection of poems and then using them as a basis for our own poetry writing. We will be discussing the features of poetry writing and identifying examples of similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia and personification.

For our Whole Class Guided Reading our text is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and we are reading Chapter Three this week.  Lilac Class are going to be developing their inference skills by answering questions that are not obvious in the text.  For example, ‘Why is Lucy initially confused in this chapter?’, ‘How can we first tell that Edmund is in Narnia?’ and ‘Why is the Queen annoyed?’

In RE this week, we are continuing with examining key words that Christians use to describe God. Lilac Class are focusing on the definitions of omnipotent, omniscient, eternal, holy, loving and spirit and why they are used in relation to God.

For our Time and Place we are finding out where the Mayans came from and when they existed.  We will be labelling a map of Mesoamerica and located it on an atlas.  We will also be studying a timeline and learning about the other ancient civilisations  that were around at the same time, for example ancient Greece.

For ICT, we are recognising the role of computer systems in our lives and identifying tasks that are managed by computer systems.

For Science in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our work about Geocentric and Heliocentric theories.  What are these models and why are they different?  We will be exploring how scientific thinking has changed over the centuries.  We will then be describing the movement of the planets relative to the Sun.  Lilac Class are finding out what planets are in the Solar System, how large they are and their position in relation to the Sun.  In Music, we will be listening to ‘Mars’ and ‘Venus’ from Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets Suite’.  Lilac Class will be thinking about the different dynamics and instruments that are used and how they convey the meaning of the music.  We will be also using graphic notation to record musical ideas.
