What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 20.11.23
In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we will be calculating multiples of 10, 100 and 1,000 using knowledge of factors to break a calculation down. Lilac Class will be using the commutative law – you can find the answer to a multiplication calculation by multiplying the factors in either order. We will also start our new block of learning entitled ‘Fractions’. Lilac Class will initially cover work about equivalent fractions, finding out the value of missing numerators and denominators using our knowledge of division and multiplication.
In English this week in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our new piece of extended writing entitled ‘Come to Belize!’ We will watch travel site videos and read information on travel websites about visiting Belize on holiday and why you should visit it. As a whole class, we will ‘Magpie’ language used and brainstorm phrases and words that are examples of persuasive writing. For example, holidaymakers can visit the lost cities of the Ancient Mayans, explore the tropical rainforests and swim in the Great Blue Hole. For our Whole Class Guided Reading our text is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ by C.S. Lewis and we are reading Chapter 11 this week. We will again be developing our inference skills by answering such questions as ‘Why does the Queen agree to give Edmund some food?’ and ‘Why is the Queen furious at the mention of Father Christmas?’ We will also be exploring the intention of the author by explaining how C.S Lewis switches from Winter to Spring and the effect this has on the reader.
In RE, we are continuing with our analysis of texts from the Bible. Lilac Class are examining reports from the scene of Jesus’s birth, referring directly to Matthew, Chapters 1 and 2. For Time and Place, we are learning about the Mayan calendar that was split into 3 parts: the Tzalkin (a day calendar), the Haab (the month calendar. There were more than 12 months because some had shorter days) and the long count calendar (measures longer periods of time. Each cycle lasts 2,880,000 days!).
For Science in Lilac Class, we will be explaining how air resistance affects moving objects through conducting an investigation. We will be timing how long it takes 3 parachutes to hit the ground. Each parachute is made of the same material but is a different size. In Art, we are finishing off painting our Mayan pottery based on original Mayan artefacts. We will be using the colours, patterns and designs of the Mayan craftsmen.
