Term 1 Week 6
Here is an outline of your learning for term 1, week 6:
Term 1 Week 6 – overview
Reading challenge – we have made a visual display to track our home reading. Each week when reading records are checked, every child who brings their record (completed with their weekly reading) they will earn a star. Remember that 10 minutes reading each day makes a huge difference to overall literacy and especially expanding vocabulary!
Our ukulele lesson with Mr Lawrence will be on Monday morning. Ukuleles are provided by school.
Spelling and grammar –we will be revising the spelling words we have worked on this term. We will also be working on organising paragraphs and recognising noun types.
In English, we continue to focus on the book ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Ballit. This week, we will start to plan our own versions of the story, by thinking about the signs our characters see to tell them that something is wrong, how the volcano erupts and how they escape. We will revise some of the language features we have learnt about, including sensory description and powerful verbs.
In Maths, we will be rounding numbers to the nearest 100 and 1,000.
In guided reading we will be continuing with our text ‘The Magic Finger’ by Roald Dahl. This is a very fun text to use to develop our skills of comprehension.
In RE, our unit of focus is ‘Creation’ and we will be touching on the story of Adam and Eve and considering why Christians say sorry and ask for forgiveness.
Our theme in Science is pitch, and we will carry out an investigation on what affects pitch in an instrument.
In History, we will continue our learning journey, investigating how large the Roman Empire became and why the Roman army was so successful.
In Art, we are looking at the still life paintings of Giorgio Morandi. This week we will practise mixing colours that in the same muted palette as Morandi’s.
PE is on MONDAY MORNING and THURSDAY AFTERNOON with Mr Luckhurst.
Reading records have been sent home with most children choosing a book from the selection in class or from the reading scheme. All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class. Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
Homework will be issued this Wednesday and is due in on the following Monday.
Please contact me if you have any queries using the class email address:chestnut@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
Have a lovely week!
Best wishes,
