Term 1 Week 3

Here is an outline of your learning for term 1, week 3

Term 1 Week 3 – overview

Reading challenge – we have made a visual display to track our home reading.  Each week when reading records are checked, every child who brings their record (completed with their weekly reading) they will earn a star.  Remember that 10 minutes reading each day makes a huge difference to overall literacy and especially expanding vocabulary!

Our ukulele lesson with Mr Lawrence will be on Monday morning.  Ukuleles are provided by school.

Spelling and grammar – learning how to spell words that are spelt with ‘sc’ but have an ‘s’ sound and will be practising using them correctly in sentences.  We will also be expanding sentences using adverbs and prepositions.

In English, we continue to focus on the book ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Ballit.  This week, we will be discussing the use of powerful verbs to describe the effects of the earlier earth tremors that occurred in Pompeii.  We will also look at the signs that something is wrong by picking them out of the text.  Using drama we will develop our ideas about how Tranio and Livia were feeling as the eruption began.

In Maths we will be working on place value skills which underpin all our mathematical work.  We will be looking at flexible partitioning of numbers to 10, 000, finding 1, 10, 100 and 1, 000 more or less and using number lines to 10, 000.

In guided reading we will be continuing with our text ‘The Magic Finger’ by Roald Dahl.  This is a very fun text to use to develop our skills of comprehension.

In RE our unit of focus is ‘Creation’ and we will be recapping on our knowledge from last week before we read and analyse the text from Genesis.

In History we will continue our learning journey investigating how the Romans changed Britain.  We will be placing the Roman rule of Britain in the context of British history and will also be placing key events in Roman history on a timeline.

In Science, we will be beginning a unit on sound.  We will initially be investigating what sound is and how it is made.

In Art, we are looking at the still life paintings of Giorgio Morandi.  We have completed some sketches of a selection of his paintings and will be attempting to mimic his muted range of colours with careful paint colour mixing.

PE is on MONDAY MORNING and FRIDAY AFTERNOON with Mr Luckhurst.

Reading records have been sent home with most children choosing a book from the selection in class or from the reading scheme.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on Tuesday and Friday mornings.

Homework will be issued this Wednesday and is due in on the following Monday.

Please contact me if you have any queries using the class email address:chestnut@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

Have a lovely week!

Best wishes,

Mrs Barter
