Term 5 Week 5 – overview

Reading challenge – we have made a visual display to track our home reading.  Each week when reading records are checked, every child who brings their record (completed with their weekly reading) they will earn a star.  Remember that 10 minutes reading each day makes a huge difference to overall literacy and especially expanding vocabulary!

We have our usual Monday morning ukulele lesson with Mr Lawrence.

Spelling and grammar – we are practising some homophones and revising the use of apostrophes for possession.

In English, we are continuing with our unit based on the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf.  This week, we will be considering the role of the monster in the narrative and learning how to use powerful verbs as part of our description.  We will be creating our own monster to feature in the stories we go on to write.  We will also be learning the ‘show not tell’ technique to make our writing more exciting and sophisticated.

In Maths we will continue our unit on fractions with a focus on equivalent fractions.

In guided reading we will be starting our new text, Varjak Paw by SF Said.  It is a mysterious tale set around a family of Mesopotamian Blue cats……

In RE our unit of focus is ‘What do Hindu people believe about God?’  We will be learning about the concepts of brahman and atman and how they influence how Hindu people live their lives.

Mrs Atkinson will be teaching Science on Monday afternoons.  This term’s topic is habitats.

In History, we will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons.  This week we will be learning about the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and how society was organised within them.

We are now completing our sculptures by outlining the bold painted designs with thick black markers.  The children are really looking forward to bringing their sculptures home!

In Computing, we will be carrying out our fifth lesson on photo editing.

PE is on MONDAY MORNING with Mr Luckhurst.  Swimming is on Friday.

Reading records have been sent home with most children choosing a book from the selection in class.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on a Wednesday morning.  

Homework will be issued this Wednesday and is due in on the following Tuesday because of the Bank Holiday.
