  • This Week's Learning

    Term 6 Week 2

    In Maths this week we are going to finish learning about 2D and 3D shapes. Then we are going to start learning about measuring mass, capacity and temperature. We will begin by comparing mass and then measuring objects in grams and kilograms. 

    In Phonics, we will continue to explore how to add the -ment and -ness suffixes to words. We will also learn to spell the tricky words 'hour' and 'move'.  

    Next week we will also be starting our new 'At Home and Abroad' Enquiry. We will start by exploring our surroundings and categorising the key features into Human and Physical characterisers. Next, we will use mapping skills to create a map of our local surroundings. We will use symbols to add a key to our maps to give it more detail. 

    In Computing, we will focus on using the Chrome Music Lab to make digital pieces of music. If you would like to use this tool at home, please follow this link:

    We will also be completing PE, Mastering Number, Guided Reading and PHSCE lessons. If you have any questions about any of these activties, please do not hesitate to contact us via the Beech Class email. 

    On Wednesday afternoon, we have Year 2 Sports Day. We would love to see as many of you as possible to cheer on Beech Class.

    On Friday we have our rescheduled trip to Tonbridge Castle. We are leaving promptly in the mooring, so please make sure that your child arrives at school on time and appropriately dressed for the weather conditions.

    Term 5 Week 5

    This week, Year 2 pupils will begin their KS1 SATs in Reading and Maths. Pupils will be working in small groups, with a familiar adult and there is no time limit for the tests. If you have any questions or queries about these tests, please do not hesitate to contact us using the Beech Class email address. 

    When we are not doing our SATs, we are going to spend much of the week focusing on Science. First we will explore the difference between things that are alive, dead and have never been alive. Next, we will turn our attention to plants and learn about their different parts and functions. Then we will explore the life cycle of a plant and compare and contrast it with the life cycle of animals. Finally, we will explore habitats and plant adaptation.

    In Phonics this week, we are focusing on 'war' saying as /wor/ and as 'wor' saying /wur/. For example: war, ward, warm, towards, world, worst, work, worth. We will also learn to spell the tricky words prove and improve. Our grammar focus for the week will be on subordinating conjunctions.

We will also continue to explore 2D shape. First, we will work on drawing 2D shapes. Next we will learn about symmetry in 2D shapes. 

    We will also complete Mastering Number, Guided Reading, PE, PHSCE and Design and the Arts sessions as well.

    Term 5 Week 6

    In English this week we are going to write the final parts of our final chapters for our class quest narrative. We are going to add a section of dialogue between Sir Jake and the Dragon and then describe the battle between them. 

    In phonics we will be focusing on adding the -er, -est and -y suffixes to create words like longer, warmer, coldest, windy, wetter, hottest, sunny and funny. 

    We will also learn to spell the tricky words 'special' and 'enough'.  

    Our grammar focus will be to use adjectives to create expanded noun phrases which we use to improve sentences, 

    In Maths, we will focus on telling the time on an analogue clock. We will work on telling the time 'to the hour' and then utilise these skills to tell the time to the nearest 5 minute interval. We will also learn about 2D shapes with a special focus on their sides and vertices. 

    We will also complete Mastering Number, Guides Reading, RE, Design and the Arts and PHSCE lessons as well.
