Term 5 Week 1
What Lilac Class are doing for the week begininng 19.4.21
What we are doing this week in Lilac Class
WB: 19.4.21
In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our unit of work about fractions. We will be looking at fractions greater than 1 and using manipulatives and diagrams to show that a fraction can be split into wholes and parts. This learning will lead on to work about improper and mixed numbers.
In English, Lilac Class this week will be writing poems about the sea. In addition to using the features of poetry writing that we have used before, the focus will be ‘personification’ and using this in our own poetry. For inspiration, Dr Charles will be reading to the class a selection of poems that feature personification. In pairs, the class will be annotating these, looking carefully for examples of personification that the poet has used.
This week we will start to read our new Whole Class Guided Reading text for the Summer Term entitled ‘Shackleton’s Journey’ by William Grill. The author has also beautifully illustrated the book. ‘Shackleton’s Journey’ is the epic true story of how Ernest Shackleton and his crew managed to survive crossing the frozen heart of Antarctica.
In RE, we will begin our work about Islam. The main question that we are exploring this term is ‘What do Muslims believe about the way they should live their lives and why?’ For the next couple of weeks we are finding out about why the Five Pillars of Islam are important to Muslims. Key questions are ‘How is life like a journey?’; ‘What do people need to support them on that journey?’; ‘What do Muslim people believe and do to help them on their life’s journey?’; ‘How does this help me to think more deeply about my life as a journey?’
The title of our main Topic for the Summer Term is ‘Life on Earth’. In Science this week, we will be categorising animals into their specific groups based on characteristics. We are finding out why an animal is a reptile, amphibian, mammal, fish or bird. In Topic, we are going to be involved in a lot of atlas and map reading. Our task is to find out what the oceans, seas and continents of the world are called and where they are located.
