Our learning from Term 4 Week 4
Phonics
This week in phonics, we have been learning the new sounds 'igh' and 'oa'. The children have been practising writing these sounds independently and using them to build words. They have also been creating fantastic sentences containing these sounds, practising segmenting and blending to read and write new words. We have also continued to use tricky words in sentences, helping to build fluency in writing.
Maths
In maths, we have been working on recognising when towers are made of 7 or not and exploring how 7 can be composed in different ways. We have also continued our work on height, understanding that height is a type of length, and comparing different objects around us.
Drawing club
In Drawing Club, linked to our topic People Who Help Us, we have been reading Busy People – Doctors. The children enjoyed drawing a doctor, a situation where a doctor might help (e.g., fixing a broken bone), and designing a doctor's bag filled with important medical equipment. We explored new vocabulary, including stethoscope, injection, poorly, and prescription, discussing what each of these words means.
Special Visit
A highlight of the week was a visit from a real nurse! She talked to us about her job in A&E, what her uniform looks like, and the equipment she uses. The children had the chance to use real bandages and pen lights, pretending to be doctors and nurses themselves—it was an amazing hands-on experience!
PE
In PE, we have been developing jumping and landing safely. Using the theme of desert animals, the children moved like different animals, showing how they jump and land in unique ways.
Poetry basket
We also explored a new poem, "A Little House", and had great fun coming up with actions to help us remember the poem and performing it as a class.
To end the week, we celebrated Red Nose Day, marking its 40th anniversary! It was wonderful to see the excitement and enthusiasm of the children as we joined in the celebrations.
Finally, a huge thank you to all the parents who attended Parents’ Evening this week—it was lovely to share your child’s progress with you!
Welcome Wednesday is every week from 8:30–9:00am—come into the classroom to read with your child or see what they have been learning!
Star of the week: Congratulations to Demi, who is our star of the week, for great improvement in her phonics and for being more confident in answering questions. Demi will be taking home her certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about her time spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.
Please remember to read with your child, even for just 5 minutes! Please also remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week! Please remember to have the library book in your children's book bag on Thursday to be changed.
Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
I apologise for the lack of photos. These will hopefully be uploaded on Monday! Have a fantastic weekend!
