Term 2 Week 1

Our learning from Term 2 week 1

Welcome back!

This week in Reception, we’ve been busy learning new sounds, exploring stories, and building key skills!

Phonics

In Phonics, we learnt the sounds d and g. The children practised writing these letters on their whiteboards and had fun identifying pictures of objects that begin with each sound and orally blending words.

Maths

In Maths, we continued to work with the number 5 and explored the concepts of “more” and “fewer.” This week, we also introduced the word equal. The children practised sharing items equally amongst three characters.

Drawing club

We’re also excited to have launched our Drawing Club! We started with the story The Little Red Hen. Together, we discussed the story, explored key vocabulary, and imagined new plot twists. Each session, the children tackled a different drawing task—this week, they drew The Little Red Hen, designed a farm with a surprising animal on it, and illustrated something “disgusting” to put on their bread! Their creativity and imagination shone through in every picture.

Our new topic

Our new topic for this term is Traditional Tales, and we began by reading The Three Little Pigs. The children created a story map to retell the tale in their own way, which helped reinforce their understanding of the sequence of events and key characters.

Physical Education

In PE, we focused on balance and teamwork. The children worked in pairs to complete activities that challenged them to stay balanced and move together—a wonderful opportunity to develop coordination and cooperation skills.

Finally, we started learning the words to our Nativity songs! The children are already singing along beautifully, and we can’t wait to share the performance with you all soon.

It’s been a busy and joyful week in Reception, and we’re looking forward to all the exciting learning ahead!

Star of the week: Congratulations to Pearly-May, who is our star of the week for her amazing story map. Pearly-May will be taking home her certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about her week spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.

Please continue sending your children in full PE kits with labelled jumpers on WEDNESDAY'S and FRIDAY'S this term.

If you are reading with your child, please remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week!
