Oak Class

Week Beginning: Monday 20th April

Hello there, Oak Class!

I hope you all had a lovely Easter and have been managing to enjoy the sunshine!

The work on the Wider Curriculum is to last you two weeks. Try your best to do at least one activity from each subject. I have included some light experiments that you could try at home for fun in the science resources below.

Don’t forget to share your holiday journals with me or any other writing you have been doing. My email is: oak@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk

Sending lots of love to you all!

Miss Mercer

Reading:

  • Read chapters 17-20 of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (PDF attached in folder) and answer the questions for each chapter from The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas workbook. Also, let me know what you thought of the book.
  • Complete two of the challenges from The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas challenge cards.
  • When completing guided or supported reading of an age appropriate text, focus on factual recall. Use the factual section of this questioning tool to generate questions to ensure that your child has fully understand what they are reading.

For example:

-When did the character go to the shops?

-What did they do next?

-Who is in the shop?

-Where are the characters going?

Spag:

  • Complete the ‘identifying clauses’ worksheet. Start with the one star activity, then work your way through to 3 stars if you can.
  • Remember:
    • The main clause is the part of the sentence that makes sense on its own and the subordinate clause does not make sense on its own. For example ‘If it rains tomorrow, I will not be able to go to the park. ‘I will not be able to go to the park’ makes sense on its own, therefore it is the main clause. ‘If it rains tomorrow’ does not make sense on its own and is therefore the subordinate clause. The subordinating conjunction is the word that links the two clauses together. In this case, the subordinating conjunction is ‘if’.
    • To help you remember the subordinating conjunction, think of I saw a wabub. I have attached the poster we use at school to remind you.

Writing:

  • Your main writing activity this week is the newspaper activity from chapter 20 of the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas workbook. I would like this piece of work sent to me: oak@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
  • When you are writing, I would like you to focus on your writing targets. Are you someone that needs to focus on ensuring your work is in sentences with full stops and capital letters? Do you need to work on including colons and semi-colons in your work? Do you need to work on adding detail and description to your writing? Choose the target that you feel is most appropriate for you and focus on including it in your news report.
  • Think about the techniques you used when you wrote your newspaper report on the outbreak of WW1. The key details in the first paragraph (who, what, where, when, how) and more detail in the following paragraph. I have attached the PowerPoint we used in class to help jog our memories.
  • I would also like you to send me activities 1 and 2 from chapter 20 of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas workbook. Question 1 is ‘Your opinion: If you could change this ending, what would you change about it? Explain your answer.’ Question 2 is ‘Point of view: Imagine you are Bruno’s father. Write about any regrets you might have at the end of the story.’
