Chestnut Class
Week Beginning: 15th June
Dear Chestnut parents/carers and children,
Your core learning for the week is set out in this letter.
Reading: Read Chapters 31, 32 and 33 of Varjak Paw, which are provided for you. There are also some questions to answer. See if you can follow the pattern we have adopted of reading and re-reading before answering the questions. We are SO close to the end of this brilliant book now!
Sign up for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. It started on Friday 5 June and runs throughout the summer holidays, finishing at the end of September. It is aimed at children aged 4 – 11 and is completely free! The challenge features games, quizzes and downloadable activities to incentivise and encourage children and their families to take part in reading related activities at home. Children can choose their own reading goals, create book reviews, play games and collect virtual rewards. Parents and guardians can register their children online at www.sillysquad.org.uk
Please also make sure you are carrying out additional reading each day. You could use the grid below to explain what you are reading to an adult. Challenge yourself to ask questions based on each area of the chart. For example, you could ask a ‘where?’ question from the left side, or combine it with a ‘should question from the top section to create a ‘where should ‘ question.
Oxford Owls This website provides access to free reading material. You will need to use the log on: chestnut101 and the password: pupil
You have a Purple Mash grammar activity relating to pronouns and proper nouns.
You have a spelling quiz on Purple Mash and a ‘look, say, cover, write’ sheet to practise with.
Writing - This links to your guided reading. Revisit chapters 32 and 33. I would like you to imagine you are one of the cats being held captive in the cage in the Contessa’s room. Your task is to write a help letter to your cat family in the city. You will need to explain how you got captured and taken to the Contessa’s house. You will have to include descriptions of the Gentleman and the black cats and the place you are taken to. I look forward to seeing you use interesting adjectives and adverbs. Think about how scared you would be trapped in the cage with lots of other cats! You can illustrate your letter too if you would like!
