Term 2 Week 2
Our learning from Term 2 Week 2
Home Learning: Find objects around your home that begin with the sounds we have learnt. E.g. We have learnt about 's' so you might find a spoon! Feel free to send any photos of you doing this to the Acorn email!
The sounds we have learnt so far: s,a,t,p,i,n.m.d,g,o,c
Phonics
In Phonics, the children learnt the sounds 'o' and 'c'. We practised writing these letters on our whiteboards and went on a classroom hunt to find objects that began with the sounds we'd been learning. The children loved being detectives and spotting items that matched the sounds!
Maths
In Maths, we explored the words part and whole. We started by discussing how toys are made up of different parts that fit together and then talked about how our body has many parts that make up the whole of us. We used the song Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes to help us create a stem sentence: “My ___ (head) is a part of me, and the whole of me is ___ (Miss Evans).” On Friday, Miss Thompsett introduced mass/weight, helping us identify which items were heavy and which were light through hands-on exploration.
Religious Education
In RE, we reflected on who is special to us and why. We read The Parable of the Lost Sheep and discussed how every person, like the lost sheep, is incredibly important.
Physical Education
In PE, we became ambulances and firefighters, practising how to move safely around the area while carrying out different actions. We also developed our jumping and landing skills using beanbags, which the children really enjoyed.
Drawing Club
In Drawing Club, we’ve been reading Pip and Custard: Fireworks. We explored new vocabulary such as illuminate, gathering, thunderous, and resplendent. The children had a go at drawing creative ideas, like something to help Custard feel happier about the fireworks.
Understanding the World
In Understanding the World, we wrapped up our exploration of the senses with our final sense: taste. The children learnt new words to describe different foods, such as sweet, sour, crunchy, and smooth. Some children showed incredible bravery by trying foods while blindfolded and guessing what they were tasting—it was lots of fun! Everyone then had the opportunity to try pineapple, peaches, and free-from chocolate-covered honeycomb. It was wonderful to see their reactions and hear them describe the flavours!
Art
Finally, in Art, we linked our work to our Traditional Tales topic. The children used a variety of materials to create the Three Little Pigs’ houses. They showed amazing creativity in building their straw, stick, and brick homes!
Star of the week: Congratulations to Ryan, who is our star of the week for always giving amazing answers and asking creative questions in lessons. Ryan will be taking home his certificate and Wilfred the Elephant to write in the book all about his week spent with Wilfred over the next week and will bring him back next Thursday.
Please continue sending your children in full PE kits with labelled jumpers on WEDNESDAY'S and FRIDAY'S this term.
If you are reading with your child, please remember to record it in the reading record. We will only change your child's book if you have read with them 2 or more times in that week!
Any issues or concerns we need to know about, please speak to the Acorn team before and after school or email at: acorn@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
