Term 1 Week 7

What we are learning in Lilac Class for the week beginning 21.10.24

What we are learning this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 21.10.24

In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are starting our new block of learning entitled Multiplication and Division.  We will be finding multiples of numbers and common multiples of numbers. For example, 15 is the common multiple of both 5 and 3.  We will then be finding the common factors of a number.  Lilac Class are exploring the relationship between multiplication and division and consolidating our understanding of the words ‘factor’ and ‘multiple’.  For example, 5 is a factor of 20 and 20 is a multiple of 5. Lilac Class will also be identifying prime and composite numbers, building on our knowledge of factors.  Numbers with exactly two factors are called prime numbers and numbers with more than two factors are called composite numbers.  We will be finding out that prime numbers are all odd apart from 2, as it only has two factors.  1 is a special case as it is neither prime nor composite because it has only one factor.

In English this week, we are finishing off our diary accounts and levelling them up for a writing display.  Lilac Class will be focusing on setting and characterisation and writing about what their character hears, sees, smells and feels and describing their journey sailing across the Atlantic Ocean.  We will then be considering what questions are going through their mind when they find the gigantic abandoned ruins.

For our Whole Class Guided Reading of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis we are studying Chapter 8.  We are developing our ability to summarise events in the chapter this week by writing what has happened in less than 30 words.  Summarising is one of our key progression of skills.  In RE, we are understanding the importance of confession and penance.  Why do Christians believe that confessing their sins to God is important?  How can we show it in and out of school?  We will then re-visit our Big Question ‘What does it mean if God is loving and holy?  This is our opportunity to demonstrate everything that we have learnt.  For Time and Place, we are learning about how Mayan society was structured and the differences between an absolute and constitutional Monarchy.

For Science in Lilac Class, we are learning about the different phases of the Moon and why these happen.  We will be finding out how these occur, drawing on our learning from our Earth, Sun and Moon Workshop that we took part in at the Herstmonceux Science Observatory.  For ICT, we are completing a summative assessment of the unit of work we have covered this term about computing systems and networks.

In Art, Lilac Class will be making Mayan pottery based on original Mayan artefacts.  This week we are perfecting our sketches of our pottery and the design, patterns and colours it will be decorated with.

There will be no homework set for half-term. However, I have attached our Wider Curriculum Home Learning Matrix that contains a selection of optional activities your child could do during the holiday, if they wish.
