Term 1 Week 6

Here is an outline of your learning for term 1, week 6:

Term 1 Week 6 – overview

Each week we are fortunate to have a ukulele lesson with Mr Lawrence.  This year, this will take place on a Monday afternoon.  Instruments are provided by the school.

Spelling and grammar –we will be practising spelling patterns that we have learnt over this term and will be working on identifying and using pronouns.

In English, we will be looking at the book Escape from Pompeii, by Christina Ballit.  We will be writing our own short description of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius using the brainstormed work we did last week.  We will then move on to create our own two main characters, in keeping with the Roman setting.  We will do some stand-alone work on developing our descriptive writing before we start planning our own stories.

In Maths, we will have moved on to addition and subtractions.  We will be adding 2 4-digit numbers without exchanging, before calculating with one and then more than one exchange.  We will then be subtracting with no exchange.

In RE, we will continue our unit on Creation.  We will be considering the key themes of another part of Genesis, the story of Adam and Eve.

This term we are learning about sound in Science.  This week we will plan and carry out an investigation into sound insulation.

In History, we will be thinking about how the Roman Empire was able to expand on such a great level.  We will be focusing on why the Roman army was so successful.

In Computing, the pupils will be covering the World Wide Web.

PE is on Monday morning with Mrs Barter and on a Thursday afternoon with Mrs Tompsett.   This term we are going to be practising football and basketball skills.

Reading records will be sent home with free-reading children choosing a book from the selection in class or bringing one from the reading scheme.  All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class.  Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

Homework will be issued this Wednesday and is due on the following Monday.
