What we are doing this week in Lilac Class for the week beginning 8.7.24
For Maths in Lilac Class, we will be multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000 and thinking about where the digits will move on a place value chart. It is important that we realise that the decimal point itself does not move. We will then start to learn about negative numbers by examining vertical representations to develop an understanding. We will also be completing number sequences
In English this week in Lilac Class, we are drafting our biography of Sir Ernest Shackleton. We will be finding out what biographical writing is and finding out about the different phases of Shackleton’s life. Lilac Class will also include at the end of the biography information about the discovery of the wreck of the Endurance on the 5th of March 2022 and what important artefacts are in the wreck at the bottom of the Weddell Sea.
In our guided reading session Lilac Class will be reading books from our Reading Curriculum. For example, The Window by Jeannie Baker and Flotsam by David Wiesner as well as Everest about Edmund Hilary by Alexandra Stewart and Joe Todd-Stanton. For RE in Lilac Class, we are learning about the Qur’an and why it is important to Muslims and making connections between what is written in the Qur’an and how we should live our lives. For example, ‘Be kind to your parents, especially when they are old’, ‘Always keep promises’ and ‘Be honest day by day’. For Time and Place in Lilac Class, we are finding out about different natural resources in India. We will be thinking about what natural resources are and why India was colonised by the British in 1858.
For Science in Lilac Class, we are sorting animals according to their life cycle and how they reproduce. We are also learning about the different stages of human development. Lilac Class are then going to find out about the work of the famous naturalists Jane Goodhall and Sir David Attenborough and the contributions they have made to knowledge. For Design and the Arts, we are finishing our seascapes using a range of different materials to create a variety of effects and textures. The mixed media design ‘Colourful Fish Swirl’ by the artist Nikki B who lives in Tintagel in Cornwall and photographs of the coastline around Tintagel will give us inspiration. In ICT, we are explaining how selection directs the flow of a program. We will be designing the flow of a program that contains ‘if…then…else…’ Lilac Class will be using the Scratch programming environment.
There will be no homework set for the rest of the term. However, please check that your child has completed reading the e-book Dark Water. There is also the Summer Reading Challenge being held again this year at the Tunbridge Wells Library in the Amelia Scott Centre.
