Term 5 Week 4
Here is an outline of your learning for term 5, week 4:
Term 5 Week 4 – overview
On Thursday, we are lucky enough to be attending a session at the Tunbridge Wells Literary Festival with the author and illustrator Liz Pichon. Many children are familiar with her series of Tom Gates novels and I hope they are inspired by this workshop.
Reading challenge – we have made a visual display to track our home reading. Each week when reading records are checked, every child who brings their record (completed with their weekly reading)will earn a star. Remember that 10 minutes’ of reading each day makes a huge difference to overall literacy and especially expanding vocabulary!
Our ukulele lesson will take place on Tuesday morning with Mr Lawrence.
Spelling and grammar –we will be revising spelling words from the statutory year 3 and 4 list. We will also be recapping using fronted adverbials in paragraphs.
We will be reading, discussing and answering questions about our guided reading text, Lob. We have reached the last 3 chapters and Lucy has still not been reunited with Lob. Lob has made a new friend, a blind man who can hear him. We have had some interesting discussions about whether Lucy and Lob will ever see each other again……
In English, we will be harvesting setting descriptions from the adapted Beowulf text we are reading. We will then use our thesaurus skills to develop own ideas. We will also be looking at the conventions of hero myths and identifying them in Beowulf.
In Maths, we will be calculating the perimeter of irregular polygons, completing an end of unit perimeter assessment and beginning our next unit on fractions
In RE, our new unit of focus is an exploration of the Hindu faith. This term we will learn about the concepts of karma, samsara and moksha.
In Science, we will move on from learning about teeth to the rest of the human digestive system. We will carry out some simple tests to understand the work of the salivary glands and the role of digestive enzymes.
In art, we will complete our unit on typography by evaluating our 3-D maps and reflect on what we have learned about deliberate choice of font over this unit.
PE is on MONDAY MORNING (Mrs Barter) and THURSDAY AFTERNOON (Mrs Tompsett).
Reading records have been sent home with most children choosing a book from the selection in class or from the reading scheme. All children have an additional book in their tray for reading sessions in class. Please could we have reading records in school to be checked on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
Homework will be issued this Wednesday and is due in on the following Monday.
Please contact me if you have any queries using the class email address: chestnut@st-barnabas.kent.sch.uk
Have a lovely week!
Best wishes,
Mrs Barter
