What we are doing this week in Lilac Class
WB: 20.6.22
This week is Assessment Week. We will be assessing Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, Writing, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are starting our new block of learning entitled ‘Decimals’. We will be adding and subtracting decimals within 1 building on our knowledge of decimals and place value. Using part-whole models, Lilac Class are finding decimals that total 1.
In English this week, we are continuing with writing a ‘Conscience Alley’ in the role of Ernest Shackleton. Lilac class will be reading our supplementary text by Meredith Hooper about the expedition entitled Ice Trap! Shackleton’s Incredible Expedition. We are writing a ‘Conscience Alley’ where we are exploring what Shackleton’s state of mind might have been at the point where he leaves Elephant Island. We are forming an opinion about whether Shackleton made the right decision to leave his men and find help and what dilemmas he may have experienced. In Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill, our Whole Class Guided Reading text, we are examining phrases that the author has used and thinking about what is meant by them. For example, ‘What do you think the author means when he says the crew were reaching their limits?’
In RE this week, we are learning about Sawm and why it is important for Muslims. We are thinking about what it is like to give something up for a length of time that we would really miss. We will also be exploring why Muslim people believe that it is important for them to fast during the month of Ramadan.
For our Time and Place topic entitled ‘Life on Earth’ we are this week continuing with our work about monsoons and why they occur in India. We will also be learning about the different mountain ranges found in India and how they ae formed. For Science in Lilac Class, we are continuing with our work about the naturalist and animal behaviourist Jane Goodall and the work of David Attenborough. We are also writing about what we found out when we went on our visit to Hilbert Park for a wildlife walk. We looked out for different wildlife and their habitats and we did some tree identification based on their leaves and bark rubbings. In Music, we have our rehearsal (we are walking to the assembly Halls in the morning to practise all the songs with the other schools) and performance for the Tunbridge Wells Singing Festival to be held on Tuesday 21st June at the Tunbridge Wells Assembly Halls. Please remember to purchase tickets (if you have not already done so) from the Assembly Hall’s website. Information via the school office has gone out about this.
