What we are doing this week in Lilac Class
WB: 10.1.22
This week will be assessment week where we are checking our children’s progress in Maths, Reading and Writing. In addition, there will be some Maths and English lessons taking place in the morning. In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we will be learning more about factors and moving onto common factors, using arrays and Venn diagrams to consolidate our learning.
In English, we are going to start our first piece of extended writing that will take several sessions to complete. This will begin with a drama activity where we are going to act out in groups the events that took place in Chapter 1 of Street Child by Berlie Doherty entitled ‘The Shilling Pie’. This will serve as a building block for our extended piece of writing. The children are writing from the perspective of Jim Jarvis (the central character), exploring the setting and his thoughts and feelings. For Guided Reading this week, Lilac Class will be reading Chapters 2 and 3 and answering comprehension questions. The focus is to think about the actions of characters and why they behave the way they do.
In RE, we will be examining passages from Exodus 1:8-4 and 1:22 and thinking about why God’s people needed freedom and justice. Lilac Class are learning about the suffering of the Israelites in Egypt and exploring what oppressed, persecute, justice, freedom and salvation mean.
For our Topic this week Lilac Class are learning about Queen Victoria. We will be categorising information about her under these areas: Ancestors, Family Life, Royal Duties and her Personality. In Science, we are sorting materials and objects according to their properties. For example, whether they are waterproof, magnetic, are made through a reversible change or an irreversible change, are a conductor, are flammable, transparent, opaque or they are an insulator? In Art we are designing a docklands frieze of 19th century Victorian London.
