What we are doing this week in Lilac Class
WB: 1.3.21
In Maths this week in Lilac Class, we are learning to multiply 4-digits by 2-digits where we are consolidating the use of the formal written method. We will then start our work about division dividing 2, 3 and 4 digits by 1 digit.
In English, Lilac Class are continuing to use ‘You Wouldn’t Want to Be a Victorian School Child!’ by John Malam as a tool and scaffold for writing. Last week we discussed the text during our live google meet session and started to plan and organise our ideas. This week we are going to draft our diary entry describing our typical school day as a Victorian child using the conventions of a diary account. For example, including the date of the entry, writing in the first person, using the past tense, telling events in chronological order, including personal feelings and emotions, using paragraphs to organise our writing and including ‘time fronted’ adverbials such as ‘next’, ‘after that’, ‘immediately’, ‘before long’, ‘eventually’. In Guided Reading, we are now reading Chapters 14 and 15 of ‘Street Child’. Our focus will be summarising events that have happened in the story and exploring reasons behind a character’s behaviour.
In RE, our learning question that we are exploring this week is ‘What do Humanists value?’ Lilac Class will be analysing statements from Taryn and her family, locating key phrases and statements that tell us what they value to be important in life as a Humanist. We will also be designing a building that reflects Humanist values.
For our Topic this week, Lilac Class are learning about health, medicine and disease in Victorian times and the progress that was made in health care during Queen Victoria’s reign. As part of STEM Week, on Tuesday 2nd March from 14.20 to 15.10 there will be an online live Science lesson entitled Liquid Nitrogen. We will be joining Mr James Tate, Head of Physics at Sevenoaks School, as we use liquid nitrogen to explore the fascinating world of cryogenics and learn what happens when items are cooled down by 200°C. We will be seeing materials behave in ways you never thought possible! In Art, we will be continuing with our designs inspired by the work of William Morris.
