    Term 2 Week 6

In English and Communication this week, we are focusing on writing a first person diary entry from the point of view of Samuel Pepys. We are going to imagine that he is visiting a Frost Fair for the first time. We will focus on creating simple, compound and complex sentences which recount his experiences. We will also focus on using descriptive sentences to describe what he sees and how he feels.

In Phonics, we will be focusing on using 'le' to make the /l/ sound. For example, in words such as bubble, middle, table, apple, little, puddle, giggle and cuddle. Our grammar focus will be on common nouns.

In Maths, we are focusing on subtraction. First we will learn techniques to subtract through 10. Then we will use and apply this understanding to subtract through multiples of 10.

In Time and Place, we will be using our trip to the ice rink to make comparisons between the Thames Frost Fair of 1666 and the modern ice rink at the Calverly Grounds.

In Science and Computing, we will be focusing on how we can use computer software to make changes to the digital photographs that we took last week.

We will also be completing Mastering Number, RE and Design and the Arts lessons as well as practising for the KS1 Nativity. What a busy week!

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us directly using the class email address.

    Term 2 Week 5

In English and Communication this week we are going to start planning a new diary entry from the perspective of Samuel Pepys. We will start by creating simple action sentences which retell events. We will then use a range of conjunctions to create compound and complex sentences.

In Phonics, we are going to learn to use 'wr' to make the /r/ sound. For example- in words such as wrong, wrist, write, wrote and wrist. Our grammar focus for the week will be adverbs.

In Maths, we will be focusing on subtraction. We will be using the bridging through 10 technique to subtract through 10 and multiples of 10.

In Time and Place, we will be learning about the Thames Frost Fairs. We will use primary and secondary sources of information to learn about this historical event.

In Science and Computing, we will learn about how to take effective photographs. We will then examine some of the photographs we took last week and consider how they could be improved.

In Outdoor Learning, we will walk to the local woodlands to collect natural resources which can be used to make natural Christmas decorations.

We will also complete Mastering Number, Guided Reading, PE and RE lessons as well as continuing our preparation for the KS1 Nativity.

If you have any questions, please contact us using the class email address.

    Term 3 Week 3

In English and Communication this week, we are going to take the speech bubbles that we created last week and turn them into comics and sections of narrative. We are going to learn about the rules of speech punctuation and apply them in our own pieces of writing.

In Phonics we are going to learn to use 'kn' to make the /n/ sound to spell words such as knight, knee, know, knife, knock and know. Our grammar focus will be on using alphabetical order.

In Guided Reading, we are going to focus on the conventions of play scripts and begin rehearsing our lines for the Key Stagw 1 nativity.

In Maths we are going to focus on using our knowledge of the number bonds to 10 to solve increasingly complex addition calculations. We will also focus on how using a rekenrek, 10 grids and number-lines can support us.

In Science and Computing, we are going to focus on creating universally applicable rules to support us to stay safe when using Information Technology. We are also going to start to learn about how to take digital photographs.

We will also complete Mastering Number, Design and the Arts and PE lessons as well.

    Term 2 Week 2

For Beech Class’ Home Learning next week, we would like Beech pupils to start getting ready for the Key Stage 1 Nativity.

The first step in our preparation is to record some of our lines in advance. We have copied and highlighted the lines that each child is going to pre-record. Please note- this is NOT the role that they will play on stage.

We would very much appreciate it if you could practise reading these lines at home with fluency and enthusiasm.

We will be recording these lines on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th November. So we kindly ask that all Beech pupils are ready to record their lines by this date. Please note, your child will be able to read their lines from the script during the audio recording session.

Further details about the dates of the performances, roles, costumes and the lines that your child will perform on stage will follow at a later date.

Thank you for your continued support,

    The Beech Team

    Term 2 Week 2

In English and Communication this week we are going to complete our Samuel Pepy's diary entry. Then we are going to explore how direct speech can be recorded in narrative writing. We will use this understanding to plan out a section of dialogue involving Samuel Pepys and record it an different ways.

In Phonics we are learning to use 'gn' to make the /n/ sound. We will also learn to spell the tricky words know and colour. Our grammar focus is on using alphabetical order to the first and second letter in words.

In Guided Reading we will be focusing on developing fluency and using retrieval skills to find relevant information in texts.

In Maths we are going to focus on using simple addition and subtraction facts to solve more complex calculations.

In Science and Computing we are going to analyse the materials used to build houses in 1666. We will then draw conclusions relating to their suitability and the extent to which this contributed to the fire.

We will also complete Mastering Number, PE and Design and the Arts lessons as well. If you would like more information relating to any of these activties, please contact us using the class email address.

    Term 2 Week 1

In English this week, we are going to continue writing first person recounts from the point of view of Samuel Pepys. In order to make our writing as historically accurate as possible, we are going to take a virtual guided tour of the 'Fire, Fire' exhibition at the Museum of London. We will then use this understanding to insert relevant information into our recounts.

In Phonics, we are going to focus on adding 'es' to words ending in 'y'. For example, flies, spies, babies, teddies, carries, hurries and cries. Our grammar focus will be on plural nouns.

In Guided Reading, we will work in small groups to complete short reading comprehension activities. We will focus particularly on reading with fluency and using basic retrieval skills to find relevant information from the text.

In Science and Computing, we will focus on sorting objects according to the material they are made from and their material properties. We will use single and double Venn Diagrams to help us do so. We will also focus on internet safety and create generalised rules which can be universally applied to help us stay safe while using Information Technology.

We will also be completing sessions in Mastering Number, PE and Design and the Arts. If you have any questions about our learning, please do not hesitate to contact us using the class email address.

    Term 1 Week 7

In English this week, we are focusing on adding detail to the simple sentences we have written from the point of view of Samuel Pepys. We will focus on using adverbial phrases to add detail before writing sentences which show and tell the audience how Pepys was feeling.

In Phonics we will be using the 'dge' and 'ge' graphemes to make the /j/ sound. e.g. edge, hedge, badge, bridge, change, large, orange, challenge. We will also be learning to spell the tricky words 'bought' and favourite'. Our grammar focus will be to use capital letter for proper nouns.

In Maths, we will finish off our Place Value unit of work and begin our Addition and Subtraction unit. We will start by systematically finding all the possible number bonds to 10 and then using them to create families of related addition and subtraction calculations.

In Science and Computing we are going to explore how material properties can be used to sort and categorise objects. We will also explore how to stay safe online and create a set of class rules for safe Information Technology usage.

We will also complete Mastering Number, Guided reading, Design and the Arts and PE sessions as well. If you would like to know more about any of these activities, please do not hesitate to contact us directly using the class email address.
